Wind Uplift Considerations For Adjustable Pedestals and pavers on balconies & roof terraces

18 July 2024

Weather patterns are changing in the UK with high winds and torrential rainstorms becoming a regular occurrence. There is a growing focus in the construction industry on how to protect vulnerable structures such as balconies and roof terraces from wind uplift to ensure their safety and durability.

So what can architects do to mitigate wind uplift and still provide a safe, secure solution which is aesthetically pleasing? First, let’s understand what causes this climate hazard in the first place.

Read on to find out more…

WHAT IS WIND UPLIFT AND WHAT ARE THE DANGERS?

Wind uplift occurs when a strong wind makes contact with a vertical surface such as the side of a building and is forced upwards. This can cause sufficient wind acceleration, creating pockets of negative pressure on horizontal surfaces such as balconies, roof terraces and rooftops. This pressure can be so strong that unsecured pavers or porcelain tiles are lifted from their subframe.

Wind uplift like this can result in extensive property damage with costly repairs and remediation works. More concerning could be the danger to the public and nearby properties from falling debris, potentially resulting in lawsuits and a damaged reputation.

In this post, we explore both visible and hidden-fix solutions to ensure that wind uplift will never be a problem, ensuring your pavers remain firmly in position whatever the elements throw at you.

lock it down with a u-washer

A visual way of tackling wind uplift is through use of our Wind Resistance Discs (U-WASHER)This reliable fixing physically locks pavers to the head of the pedestal, securing everything in place. The disc sits flush on the pavers and comes in 7 different colours so you can customise the look of your outdoor space. You can match the disc with your pavers or go for a contrasting colour to make your project stand out.

Compatible with all of our standard pedestal ranges , the U-WASHER requires a 4.5mm thick spacer tabs as a minimum to accommodate the width of the screw.

If your scheme requires a seamless look, there are hidden-clip systems available, but these tend to be mechanical fixes that require the sides of tiles to be grooved, and this can mean a tile's edges reduced to 8mm or less on a 20mm porcelain tile.  This can considerably weaken tiles with the potential to cause breakages.

our new invisible solution - a-fix-wind-safe

With this in mind, Buzon have gone a step further, launching an invisible fix solution that requires no modifications to pavers or tiles. Ideal for retrofit on existing sites identified as a cause for concern as well as being a cost-effective solution for new projects. A-FIX-WIND-SAFE bonds pavers and porcelain tiles directly to the pedestal head or rail.

This new non-combustible wind uplift solution offers a number of benefits:

  • A non-mechanical permanent fix

  • Strong enough to withstand winds of up to 470mph depending upon product configuration.

      • Fully tested with Buzon’s Class A fire-rated A-PED range, as well as pedestals which form part of BROOF(t4) certified systems, the PB & DPH and ALUrail ranges.  Test results showed that even the most extreme conditions had minimal impact on the integrity of the systems.

  • Simple & economical to use on site - easy and fast to install requiring no extra fixings

  • No visible elements
